nerve conduction studyIf you are going to have a nerve conduction study performed, you may be wondering what it entails and what you can expect before, during and afterward. Here is some information that will help you be better prepared for this important procedure.

What it Is

A nerve conduction study is basically a test that measures the speed at which electrical impulses travel through your nerves. It is typically used to determine whether or not a patient has suffered nerve damage. The medical professional administering the test will usually stimulate a nerve with electrode patches that have been attached to the skin. The impulse used to stimulate the nerve is very mild. One electrode records the impulse, while the other electrode records the electrical activity that results from the stimulation.

Before the Procedure

Your doctor will provide specific information about your upcoming nerve conduction study, but in general there is very little you need to do to prepare. Patients typically do not need to fast beforehand, and you will probably not be sedated in any way. You will, however, want to keep your body temperature as close to normal as possible, since a lower temperature will slow nerve conduction. Tell your doctor about any medications and supplements you are taking, and dress in loose-fitting clothes. About the only sacrifice you’ll need to make is to stop using any oils or lotions on your skin for a few days before your visit.

During the Procedure

A nerve conduction study is usually performed on an outpatient basis, but may take place as part of a patient’s hospital stay. You’ll probably be asked to remove any objects (jewelry, clothing, hearing aids, etc.) that could interfere with the test. Once the electrodes are attached and the stimulation begins, you may feel a few seconds of minor discomfort. Once the study is done and the electrodes are removed, you should be able to resume your normal activities immediately.
