Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown ToenailIngrown toenails are typically not serious, but if they are not treated correctly they could result in some very troubling issues, such as infections that could lead to major problems. Let the professionals with DFW Wound Care take care of your ingrown toenail so that you do not run the risk of suffering severe complications.

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Typically, ingrown toenails will affect the big toe most often. They are usually caused by improper cutting of the nail. You may accidentally cut it in a way that it re-grows in a strange direction. For example, it may curl down or grow sideways. This can lead to irritation in the nail bed or the surrounding flesh. If your shoes or too tight or you have suffered a recent injury, you may also be at risk. Some people get them due to heredity. If, for example, your toes tend to curl due to genetics, then you may be at a higher risk for developing the condition. They may also curl if you have arthritis. If you are a runner, the repeated impact of your feet hitting the ground could also cause ingrown toenails.

How to treat Ingrown Toenails

It is very important that you do not ignore ingrown toenails. While rare, there have been occurrences where people did not get the problem treated and they suffered a severe infection as a result. In some extreme cases, amputation is even sometimes necessary. Take all of that risk out of the equation by having a doctor with DFW Wound Care take care of your problem. Get medical help at the first sign of a potential infection such as redness in the affected area. Other signs include severe pain, swelling, pus or discoloration of the toe. Emergency help will be needed if you either develop chills, fever, a lack of appetite or nausea.
