Large Bruise On Human ArmClosed wounds are different from open wounds in that the skin is left intact. It is usually caused by some sort of blunt trauma, such as when someone falls down a flight of stairs or is involved in a car accident. Here are some of the common types of closed wounds as well as treatment options.

Types

There are several different kinds of closed wounds. A contusion is one of the most common, occurring when small capillaries and blood vessels, as well as underlying tissue and muscles, are damaged. In some severe instances, internal organs can suffer damage as well as bone. Hematomas result in blood pooling in a limited area of the body. They usually result in a lesion that appears spongy and almost rubbery. Depending on the severity of the trauma, a hematoma can be small or large.

Treatments

In many instances, closed wounds are treated using compression, elevation and immobilization. The chief goals of this and other treatment approaches are to keep inflammation and bleeding under control and to reduce pain. In some cases, however, a surgical procedure is needed in over to alleviate pressure. The wound is typically left open for 2-3 days and covered with a sterile bandage in order to reduce swelling as well as pressure.

If proper treatment is not provided in a timely manner, many types of complications could arise. These may include compartment syndrome, which involves severe pressure and swelling that affects nerves, blood vessels and muscles. This can block the supply of blood to the affected area, leading to possibly permanent nerve and muscle damage as well as potential amputation.
