There are several effective treatment options for pressure ulcers that can help a patient find the relief he or she seeks. It is extremely important to address this problem as quickly as possible, because a delay could result in several different types of complications. These include joint infections, bone infections, an infection of the blood or even death. These are just a couple of the ways this problem is typically treated.
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy is one of the most advanced treatment options for pressure ulcers available. It uses light to help accelerate the natural healing process of the body. It does this by increasing the circulation of blood in the area that has been affected. Laser therapy is completely harmless and can provide a great many benefits. For instance, it not only can improve nerve function as well as vascular activity, it can also help repair tissues faster. In addition, it can promote the rapid healing of wounds.
Debridement
Unfortunately, not everyone is a candidate for laser therapy and will need one of the other treatment options for pressure ulcers. One option is debridement, or the removal of dead, infected or damaged tissue. This is accomplished through several different methods. Surgical debridement, for example, involves the cutting away of dead tissue while mechanical debridement loosens debris in a wound through irrigation, ultrasound or other methods. A process known as enzymatic debridement uses dressings and chemicals to break down tissue that has died.
Care of Pressure Ulcers
In order for these or any other treatment options for pressure ulcers to work, it will be critically important to make sure the wound is properly cleaned and dressed. This is essential to help prevent an infection from occurring. Your doctor will provide you with specific directions so that you can keep your wound properly cared for at home.
