Arterial ulcers can be extremely serious, and are typically caused by the affected area of the body not receiving the proper supply of nutrient-rich blood. It is very important that this issue is treated as quickly as possible in order to minimize the risk of potentially severe complications. These are some of the more common symptoms to keep an eye on – if you notice them, see a doctor as soon as you can.
Warning Signs
In most instances, arterial ulcers are found in areas that undergo pressure from shoes, such as the outside portion of the ankle and the tips of the toes. You may notice a loss of hair in the affected area, or an odd discoloration of the skin, such as brown, grey or yellow. In many instances, the affected area may be cool when you touch it. Also, if you elevate the area and it loses color, yet turns red when it hangs downward, that is also a sign of arterial ulcers.
This type of wound usually has a sort of “punched-out” appearance and is round in shape. It usually has well-defined margins as well. It can be painful whether you or at rest or exercising, and you may find that you get relief when you dangle your leg over the side of the bed.
