pressure ulcerPressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, occur when an area of the skin is placed under continuous pressure. It can develop in someone who is confined to a wheelchair or bedridden. These sores are very likely to worsen if not treated correctly, and lead to potentially serious complications. Here are a few of the more common options to treat this condition.

Repositioning

It is extremely important when someone develops pressure ulcers to do whatever is possible to keep from putting continued pressure on the area. Regularly changing position can help minimize the chances of complications and also prevent new ulcers from developing. Some people need to be moved as regularly as 15 minutes, while others may only need to be moved every two hours or so.

Cushions and Mattresses

There are several special cushions and mattresses available that may be able to relieve pressure on areas of the body that are more vulnerable to developing pressure ulcers. Your doctor can provide recommendations on which products may be the best for your particular situation. The more extensive the problem, the more sophisticated a product will likely be needed. For instance, someone with a severe issue may be best served using a mattress that is connected to a device that provides a constant stream of air, and can be regulated to reduce pressure when needed.

Debridement

In certain instances, a procedure known as debridement may be necessary to remove dead tissue that has accumulated due to the ulcer. Debridement techniques include laser therapy, ultrasound and irrigation. Surgery may be required in some cases in order to completely seal the wound and help prevent any other damage from taking place.
