ingrown toenailAn ingrown toenail is typically a harmless issue that happens on a regular basis. However, there are some times where it can lead to some potentially serious complications. As long as you get the treatment you need soon enough, this issue will remain minor. If you delay treatment, though, you may be running the risk for a potentially serious infection. Here is some information on this problem and signs you need to get to a doctor.

How an Ingrown Toenail Develops

You will usually find an ingrown toenail on the big toe. It usually forms when a nail is cut and it grows back either sideways, curled down or in some other odd direction. When this happens, the nail presses into the area between the flesh and the nail bed. Sometimes, an injury of some sort will affect the nail and cause it to grow the wrong way. Some people develop the problem by wearing shoes that are too tight, while it may simply be a matter of heredity for others.

When to Get Help

If you develop an ingrown toenail and you notice any sort of sign of an infection, get help as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of serious complications. Redness around the area, as well as severe pain and swelling are warning signs of a developing infection. If you notice any discoloration or pus, then you should also see a doctor. In certain instances, emergency help may be needed when someone develops a loss of appetite, fever, nausea, chills or sweating.
