hyperbaric oxygen therapyIf your doctor recommends hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat your wound, you are more than likely curious as to what this treatment method entails. Here is some information that will help you better understand how it works and why it is helpful.

What it is

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy uses a pressurized tube or room where you breathe pure oxygen. This method has proven to be effective for treating many different types of ailments, including non-healing wounds, infections and several others. When you are in the chamber, the air pressure will be significantly higher than normal – typically about three times higher. This will allow more oxygen to get into your lungs and promote healing by fighting bacteria and stimulating the release of stem cells and other beneficial substances.

Why You Need it

The tissues of the body need a great deal of oxygen in order to function properly. If an injury occurs, the affected area needs even more. One of the biggest benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is that it will increase the level of oxygen in your blood, helping to restore tissue function so that you can heal faster.

What to Expect

You will very likely undergo your therapy as an outpatient procedure with no need for hospitalization. You will either lie down on a table that will then slide into a tube, or you may be in a room designed specifically for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. You will either receive oxygen through a mask or a clear, lightweight hood will cover your head.

You may notice the same type of sensation in your ears as you would if you were in an airplane, but this can be easily relieved by swallowing or yawning. The therapy should last about two hours. Afterward, you may feel hungry or tired but you can immediately resume your normal activities.
