Diabetic WoundsIf you have diabetes, it’s critically important that you make foot care a top priority. One of the most common complications of the disease is neuropathy, which is a form of nerve damage that can cause numbness and tingling. You will also feel a cut or some other type of wound that, if not treated properly, runs the risk of becoming a severely infected wound that could threaten a person’s health (and even lead to possible amputation).  DFW Wound Care in North Texas specializes in diabetic wounds and can help make sure your feet remain as healthy as possible. Here are some tips that will help you avoid serious problems.

Daily Foot Care

Make a point of checking your feet every day before you put on your shoes. Check for wear spots on the sides of your feet as well as the backs of your heels. Look at the bottom of each foot and between your toes as well.

Clean Thoroughly

Wash your feet with soap and water on a daily basis and make sure you dry them completely. Doing this will help you spot any signs of trouble before they turn into serious complications. It will also wash away any debris or small irritants that may have accumulated on the bottoms of your feet. Try to stay away from soaking, however, because this can weaken your skin and make it more susceptible to an injury. If you use lotion, keep it away from between your toes because that can also compromise your skin’s integrity.

Talk to Your Doctor Regularly

You should make sure to make regular visits to our diabetes center in Plano to ensure the best possible scenario for your health. If you notice any infected areas or open sores, come see the doctor immediately. The faster you receive treatment, the less of a chance you’ll experience serious complications. Also, have the doctor check for any potential issues such as reduced circulation.

It will obviously take some effort to maintain proper foot care, but you will benefit greatly in the long run. The time you put in each day will make a big difference in your overall health.
