debridementAfter your debridement procedure, there will more than likely be some swelling and pain in the area for a few days. Also, your doctor may recommend that you wear either a moist dressing or a bandage over the wound – he or she will let you know how long you can expect to wear it. Here is some other information that will give you a good idea of what your recovery will be like.

How Long Will it Take?

No two debridement patients are exactly alike, so there is no “set in stone” way to tell how long it will take before you get back to normal. In general, the amount of time will depend on how extensive the procedure was and your overall health. The amount of time it will take to get back to work will largely depend on the kind of work you do. If the procedure was performed on your arm, for example, and you have a job where you need to perform heavy lifting tasks, then you may need to wait until the wound heals completely.

Debridement Home Care Tips

The way you take care of your wound at home will go a long way toward determining how long your recovery period will be. The better you follow your doctor’s instructions, the higher the likelihood your recovery will be faster. For example, avoid putting any stress on the treated area until your doctor says it is okay to do so. Keep pressure off of the wound by changing sitting and/or sleeping positions. Use pressure-relieving devices such as mattresses and cushions to evenly distribute your body weight. Follow all directions regarding medications to the letter, and also follow directions regarding taking care of your wound dressing.
