Compression TherapyIn addition to helping a leg or foot wound heal, compression therapy performs the very important function of helping a patient maintain his or her lifestyle while recovery takes place. Compression stockings support the legs and veins, minimizing swelling while helping improve circulation and promote more rapid healing.

How Compression Therapy Works

Patients are prescribed compression stockings in order to help healing occur faster. In most instances, compression provides the strongest support at the patient’s ankles that gradually decreases at the top portion of the garment. The graduation of compression helps promote improved circulation. Many people going through compression therapy are worried, thinking that the opposite will occur – the garment will reduce circulation. However, as long as the stocking is fitted properly, circulation will improve substantially.

Are Compression Garments Comfortable?

Compression garments, in many instances, look like regular dress socks or hosiery. As a result, most people will have no idea you are wearing them. These garments also come in a variety of colors and styles. They provide natural support for your legs and also help them feel more energized.

How to Wear Them

Most people who wear compression garments should only wear them during the day, while they are mobile and upright. The garment should be taken off and washed at night. If you are going through compression therapy and you need to wear your garment all day, every day, you should have a backup so you can wear one while the other is being cleaned.

More than likely, your doctor will recommend that you put on your garment when you wake up and keep it on all day until you go to bed. When you get out of the shower, make sure you are completely dry before you put it on. If you have venous insufficiency and have an ulcer, your doctor may ask you to wear the garment to bed.
