When the corner or one side of your toenail grows into and cuts the adjacent soft flesh, the resultant condition is known as an ingrown toenail. In most cases, ingrown toenails will affect the big toe, causing pain, swelling, redness and in extreme cases resulting in infections.
While it is possible to deal with ingrown toenails at home on your own, some situations require medical attention. In case the pain is severe and persists for a long time, or when it spreads to other parts of the leg, a doctor can help to relieve the pain.
At the same time, medical attention will ensure that complications do not result from the condition.
Signs of An Ingrown Toenail
People living with diabetes or other health conditions that cause a poor flow of blood to the feet face a greater risk of ingrown toenail-related complications. As such, it is important to be aware of the common signs of this condition so as to prevent the complications when the problem starts.
Pain and Tenderness
One of the most noticeable signs of an ingrown toenail is pain and tenderness in along one or both sides of your toenail. In most cases, the pain will be experienced along one nail margins. This will normally be the side where your nail has grown into the skin.
Redness and Warmth
An ingrown toenail will also result in redness around the affected area as well as uncomfortable warmth when the affected toe is touched.
Swelling
Your toe will swell, with the toe swelling most at the area around the affected toenail. This will become more painful when pressure is applied.
Pus
In some cases, a small amount of pus will be discharged from the edges of the toenail.
Infection
If the ingrown toenail is not taken care of, the tissue around the affected area may develop infections that could lead to further health complications.
Fever
Although this is not a common sign of an ingrown toenail, some people are known to develop a fever.
