An acute wound can be something as relatively harmless as a superficial scratch to a deep wound that can damage muscles, nerves, blood vessels and much more. These are just a few of the symptoms of this issue as well as treatment options.
Causes of an Acute Wound
There are several causes for an acute wound, such as someone rubbing up against a rough surface. It can also occur to due a sharp object jabbing into body tissue or a hard blow that causes tearing of the tissue. A puncture wound can cause trauma to multiple layers of skin while a laceration can result in an irregular, jagged tear.
Anyone can suffer this type of injury, of course, but active adults and toddlers are at a particularly high risk. Also, older adults with more fragile skin are at risk for abrasions and tears.
Treatment for an Acute Wound
The type of treatment for an acute wound depends on the severity of the wound. Controlling the bleeding is obviously one of the first things that needs to be done. If need be, pressure must be applied to the wound as quickly as possible. Soap and water may be used to clean minor wounds while a saline solution may be needed for a deeper or more complex wound. In some instances, debridement must be performed by a medical professional in order to clear the area of any dirt, debris or dead tissue. Antibiotics are typically prescribed for more serious wounds in order to help prevent an infection. Other medications may be needed for swelling or pain.
