If you have swelling in your legs and arms, you more than likely have a condition known as lymphedema. Here is some information on why this problem develops, some of the symptoms that people commonly experience, and potential treatment options.
Causes of Lymphedema
One of the common reasons that lymphedema develops is when someone has a surgical procedure to remove lymph nodes as part of his or her cancer treatment. The lymph nodes filter fluid, trapping foreign substances such as viruses and bacteria. These substances are then destroyed by lymphocytes, or specialized white blood cells. If your body is unable to drain fluids properly, they can begin to build up in the arms or legs. There is also a condition known as secondary lymphedema, which is normally caused by some sort of injury to the lymph nodes, radiation therapy, or certain medications. (xanax)
Symptoms of Lymphedema
If you feel as though your watch, rings or clothes seem to be too tight, or you have a feeling of unusual fullness in your legs and arms, then there is a chance you may have lymphedema. Some people also experience a lack of flexibility in their hands, wrists and ankles.
Treatments for Lymphedema
In many instances, compression garments could help ease lymphedema symptoms. But there are other treatment options as well, including skin care, dietary changes and others.
If you have a swollen leg or arm, try to elevate it to help drain fluid from the limb. Rest it on a comfortable surface and keep it above your heart level. Try to avoid putting pressure on your groin or armpit, and do not hold the limb up very long without support, because that can increase the risk of swelling.
